Greg Palmer completed a foundation course at Tameside College, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire in 1979, graduated from Portsmouth Polytechnic with a BA (Hons) degree in Fine Art (sculpture) in 1982 and from Wimbledon School of Art with an MA in Printmaking in 1991.

Having had a studio in East London for many years he relocated to the south coast in 1999 and now has a studio at Art Space Portsmouth.

He has exhibited as a solo artist and has been in group shows both in this country and throughout Europe. His work is also in public and private collections in the UK and Europe. He has received prizes for his work and undertook a residency in Duisburg in Germany in 1998.

On-going research engages with constructed landscapes and the placement of buildings in the environment. Also of significance is the decoding and deconstruction of signs and symbols and demarcations of the boundaries between private and public spaces.

His current practice (painting) also examines the institutions of the gallery and museum, particularly the presentation of items within those arenas and how exhibitions, artworks and other culturally significant items are documented and seen beyond the ‘live’ exhibition.

Other elements embedded in the work include alchemy, superstition and reason, synchronicity, autobiography, fiction, and natural history.

He has taught at a number of universities and art schools; at foundation, under-graduate and post-graduate levels. He currently is an Associate Lecturer on the B.A. Hons Fine Art course at Southampton Solent University, and on the M.A. Illustration course at Kingston University.
